Life is a Design Thesis

Rising to the Occasion

“When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” This quote may be part of the lyrics of the song by Billy Ocean echoing his ‘fight for his love’, equally it is true about the Design Thesis in the Final Year.

I see the Design Thesis as a boxing match between the Designer and his/her Shadows. True, the studio masters and crit panelists may act as the ‘nemesis’ but the real enemy is ‘yourself’. Your indecisions, your fault-finding targets except yourself, your fear of the ’shadows’…

I see some students who failed last final presentation, raised to the occasion when portfolio review came. Yes, it should not be that way, but you know the game and you played to your strengths. However this sense of respite is calling it too close and its risky.

Why were you not confident before during the semester proper? Why didn’t you raise the right questions?

Visualization in the Mind’s Eye

Filed under: Design Thesis Studio — naziaty @ 2:23 pm

Architects must have the capacity to visualize.

To visualize is a process to enable one to conceptualize.

Visualization will only be complete when it is drawn in a three-dimensional drawing and most completely with a perspective drawing of the idea.

The architect would produce an image or create a mental picture giving a desired outcome to a problem.

Visualization had been defined as “the creation of a clear picture of something in the mind[1]”.

The Mind’s Eye is a place where the essence of what you want to visualize is captured.

The Mind’s Eye is the place where the visualizer needs to go to when he/she needs to conceptualize.

Conceptualizing is a set of creative processes culminating on the Big Idea or the Concept.
